Lionel Messi, the captain of Argentina, has described a resurfaced photograph of him bathing a baby Lamine Yamal as "crazy" as the two players prepare to face each other in the upcoming World Cup final. Argentina secured their spot in the final by defeating England, setting up a match against Spain that will pit Messi against the 19-year-old Spanish sensation Yamal.
The photograph, which gained traction on social media this week, shows a 20-year-old Messi assisting in bathing Yamal, who was then six months old, for a charity photoshoot. The images were taken in 2007 as part of a UNICEF and local newspaper Sport calendar project.
Messi, speaking at Fanatics Fest in New York City, acknowledged the peculiar nature of the encounter. "That picture, it was crazy. Him as a baby, and now we are facing each other... so once again what a crazy picture," Messi said when asked about the photos by NFL icon Tom Brady. He added, "I just wish him the best of luck, and he's part of the Barcelona squad as well. We will try to give them [Spain] the best match possible, [but] Lamine is not the only great player that Spain has. So again we will give it our all."
Before commenting on the photo, Messi expressed admiration for Yamal, calling him "one of the best players in the world right now." He continued, "He's only 19 years old and he has all of his future ahead. He has the opportunity to make history, but we are also going to give it our best."
The photographer who captured the images, Joan Monfort, commented on the serendipity of the situation. "I have never been a believer or thought that anything was destined to occur, but I am beginning to have my doubts. This is beyond all reasonable explanations," Monfort stated. Yamal's mother was reportedly selected by lottery to participate in the photoshoot with Messi.
Messi, now 39, is leading Argentina to their second consecutive World Cup final, demonstrating continued world-class performance. Yamal, meanwhile, has already achieved significant success, contributing to Spain's European Championship victory and winning three Spanish titles with Barcelona before the age of 19, leading some to consider him a potential successor to Messi's legacy.
