McVay Expresses Intense Frustration After Rams' Overtime Loss

Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay expressed profound disappointment and anger following his team's 37-34 overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills on Monday night, a defeat that dropped the Rams to a 2-3 record.

McVay specifically called out the team's special teams unit, particularly kicker Harrison Mevis, whose 48-yard field goal attempt in overtime was blocked, sealing the loss. Mevis also missed a 50-yard attempt earlier in the game. "In the kicking game, especially, you know, with our PAT/field goal (unit), not even close to good enough. It cost us the game tonight," McVay stated.

The Rams had invested heavily in improving their special teams during the offseason, hiring Bubba Ventrone as coordinator and making key free-agent acquisitions. Despite these efforts, costly mistakes have persisted in recent losses.

McVay acknowledged the pain of the defeat, stating, "This stings, and it's going to hurt. But we can't let this team beat us twice, and we're going to have to regroup and reset ourselves. And it's been a while since I've been this p***ed after a game too."

Mevis, who is now five of nine on field goals this season with all misses from beyond 40 yards, felt he had made good contact on the overtime attempt. The blocked kick occurred when Greg Rousseau of the Bills penetrated the Rams' line.

Beyond special teams, McVay also reflected on his own decision-making, regretting conservative play-calling on third downs that led to long field goal attempts. "I wish I would have had a better play call and gone for it, got it a lot tighter. I'm sick right now with myself," he said.

The game's opening kickoff also foreshadowed the special teams' struggles, with a 70-yard return by the Bills setting up an early field goal.

Following the game, McVay was observed speaking directly with players, reiterating his strong feelings about the outcome. Given his candid assessment of the situation, changes to the special teams unit appear probable.
