McInnes Challenges Rangers to Focus on Performance Amidst Tynecastle Return and Cup Semi-Final

Rangers manager Derek McInnes has called on his players to disregard the impending controversy surrounding his return to Tynecastle and focus on the crucial matches ahead. The team recently secured a commanding 4-0 victory over St Johnstone, with Kevin Kelsy scoring twice, complemented by goals from Ryan Jack and Tochi Chukwuani. This win followed a draw at Dundee and sets the stage for a challenging week.

Upcoming Challenges

McInnes now faces a return to Hearts at Tynecastle on Wednesday, a venue where he previously managed before joining Rangers. He anticipates an intense reception but emphasizes that the players' ability to perform under pressure is paramount. The manager highlighted the significance of the upcoming fixtures, including a Premier Sports Cup semi-final against Aberdeen at Hampden Park on Saturday.

"Hearts away midweek is always one you would say is fraught with difficulty, but we've got to go there confident, that we're in decent form, knowing that we've got a performance in us that can win the game," McInnes stated. He views these matches as opportunities for the team to prove their capability and to establish themselves back at the club's expected standard.

Player Performance and Managerial Praise

McInnes expressed satisfaction with his team's performance against St Johnstone, particularly commending winger Kim Min-su. Despite Min-su not scoring, McInnes highlighted his significant contributions to the team's offensive play, including his involvement in the first three goals.

"He did everything but score. I'm fortunate we've got good wide players, but they know the importance of getting the numbers up, as none more so than Min-su," McInnes said. He also reflected on the team's dominance in the first half against St Johnstone, noting that while the performance was brilliant, the scoreline did not fully reflect their efforts. He urged the players to be more ruthless in front of goal.

Opposition Perspective

St Johnstone manager Simo Valakari acknowledged his team's defeat, stating, "No complaints about the result. Rangers were very strong in the first half." He noted that his side had a period of momentum in the second half when the score was 1-0, but conceded that failing to capitalize on chances against top teams often leads to them scoring. Valakari also commented on a red card shown to his player Kai Fotheringham, which he felt was perhaps unlucky as the player had initially won the ball, though the follow-through was high. The dismissal occurred after VAR prompted the referee to review the challenge.
