Rory McIlroy, a vocal critic of the LIV Golf league, questioned the value LIV stars might bring to the PGA Tour and suggested their return would be challenging. "I'd argue, have they brought value to LIV?" McIlroy stated ahead of the BMW Championship. "I think the PGA Tour's in a really good spot."
LIV Golf has reportedly secured new investment after the Saudi Public Investment Fund withdrew its funding. However, the league's future events are expected to feature fewer tournaments and reduced prize money. LIV has canceled its season-ending team championships, with its final event in Indianapolis seeing its purse cut from $20 million to $10.1 million. The winner's prize money has been halved from $4 million to $2 million.
Notable LIV players such as Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau could potentially add star power to the PGA Tour. Reports indicate that Rahm may be considering leaving LIV, while DeChambeau, whose contract is nearing expiration, has expressed interest in becoming a full-time YouTuber alongside his LIV commitments.
Brooks Koepka previously returned to the PGA Tour from LIV this year through a temporary arrangement, but he forfeited five years of equity from the Tour’s Player Equity Program. McIlroy commented on the potential return of other players, suggesting that any deal they might secure now would be less favorable than past offers.
"I'm not part of these discussions, but I'm pretty sure they're not going to be welcomed back straight away," McIlroy said, according to Golfweek. "If they were offered this returning member program back in February, the one that Brooks took, then, yeah, maybe. But that has sort of come and gone. And I think it was said at the time that the deal that they might get going forward, if they do decide to come back, isn't going to be as good as the one that Brooks got. So, yeah, I would say it's going to be a tough, tough road back."
Scottie Scheffler, who recently won the first leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs, expressed a desire for penalties for LIV defectors wishing to rejoin the PGA Tour but indicated he would welcome them back. "Getting the best players competing against each other more often is I think what everybody wants," Scheffler said. "When we talk about the best players, you know, LIV has a few players that are really good. I think the depth that we have on our Tour is bit unmatched, but I think when you look at the higher levels of LIV Golf there’s definitely some players that would provide a lot of value to the Tour, and guys that I love competing against as well."
