Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel described the upcoming week, which includes a scrimmage and game against the San Francisco 49ers, as a significant "career segment" for him. McDaniel, who is embarking on a new role with the Chargers, expressed gratitude for his past association with the 49ers and their head coach, Kyle Shanahan.

McDaniel credited Shanahan for providing him with his initial opportunities in the NFL, stating that Shanahan was the only coach who hired him for many years. Their professional relationship dates back to 2011 when they worked together on the Washington Redskins' coaching staff. This collaboration continued as they moved to subsequent teams before Shanahan took the head coaching position with the 49ers in 2017.

Initially hired as an offensive assistant by Shanahan, McDaniel progressed through the ranks, eventually becoming the 49ers' offensive coordinator in 2021. In his single season calling plays for San Francisco, the offense ranked seventh in the league, averaging 375.7 yards and 25.1 points per game. This success led to his hiring as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins the following year. Following his dismissal from Miami during the offseason, McDaniel joined the Chargers.

Looking ahead to the matchup, McDaniel anticipated an "exciting added bonus" to his daily work with the Chargers. He views the opportunity to compete against familiar coaches and a strong team as a "nice little asterisk of excitement" for the week.
