Australian Maya Joint ended Serena Williams' Wimbledon comeback bid on Centre Court, securing a career-defining victory in a match that fulfilled a childhood dream for the 20-year-old.
Williams, returning to singles action at 44 after a nearly four-year absence, showed flashes of her legendary form but was ultimately outlasted by Joint, who won 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3 in a compelling two-hour, 22-minute contest. The Australian had to overcome the disappointment of missing a match point in the second set before battling back to seal the monumental triumph.
"She has such an aura, she's such a legend," Joint said of Williams. "I've been dreaming about this moment since I was a little kid, so this is pretty crazy."
Despite her age and extended layoff, Williams proved a formidable opponent, exhibiting remarkable skill and fitness. However, Joint, who grew up in Michigan, the same U.S. state where Williams was born, maintained her composure under pressure. The 24-year age gap between the two players was the second-largest recorded in Wimbledon's open era.
This marked Williams' first singles appearance at the All England Club since her third-round exit at the 2022 U.S. Open. Before this match, Joint had struggled, losing 13 of her previous 14 matches and falling to world No. 87. Nevertheless, she delivered a performance that transcended her recent form.
Williams, who welcomed her second daughter, Adira, with Alexis Ohanian in recent years, was supported in the stands by her husband and her older daughter, Olympia, eight. Wimbledon typically enforces an age restriction of five and above for Centre Court attendees, but an exception was made for Williams' family. Also present were Williams' sister Venus and her new brother-in-law, actor Andrea Preti.
By the match's conclusion, the seven-time Wimbledon champion appeared to be experiencing physical difficulties, including a slight limp. Her last singles match prior to this was a loss to Ajla Tomljanovic at the 2022 U.S. Open. Williams graciously acknowledged the crowd as she left the court after her first SW19 singles match in four years.
