Max Verstappen Wins Singapore Grand Prix, Eyes Championship Lead
The Dutch driver secured pole position and won the sprint race, but expressed concern over recent slow starts.
Red Bull driver Max Verstappen secured pole position and won the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix sprint race, signaling a return to form for the four-time champion. This victory follows his win in the season's first race in Malaysia last week. Verstappen has been dominant in Singapore this weekend, with an upgraded Red Bull car propelling him back into contention for race wins.
However, Verstappen voiced concerns about his recent starts from pole position, describing them as "horrendous." He emphasized the need for improvement, noting that a repeat of slow starts could jeopardize his race in Sunday's Grand Prix, especially given the difficulty of overtaking on the Singapore street circuit. The Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton will start second and third, respectively, posing a threat from the outset.
Kimi Antonelli, starting fourth, has an opportunity to extend his lead over Mercedes teammate George Russell, who will start from the back due to a penalty incurred after an engine failure. Antonelli could become Formula 1's youngest-ever champion at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, on Oct. 25, if he outscores Russell by 11 points or more in the upcoming race.
