Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford indicated that he would have retired from the NFL if not for the support of head coach Sean McVay, which allowed him to prioritize time with his family. Stafford, who is married with four daughters, has spoken openly about his desire to spend more time at home.
During an appearance on the “Youth Inc” podcast on August 18, Stafford explained that McVay’s understanding of his family commitments was crucial. "I’m home every night for dinner when I’m in town. I’m there as much as I can when I have time off," Stafford said. "And and I’m lucky enough to play for a head coach, Sean, that understands that, and gives me the opportunity to be around them as much as I can."
He added that his continued participation in the sport was contingent on this flexibility. "And I frankly wouldn’t still be playing this game if that wasn’t the case. And so I appreciate him for that, and my family for that," Stafford stated.
Stafford also shared anecdotes about his family's involvement in his career, including his daughters offering pre-game advice. "My family are] my favorite thing, man. I run over to them on Sundays before games, and talk to them, and they give me great advice like, ‘Don’t get tackled!'"
McVay and Stafford have developed a close relationship beyond their professional roles. Rams fans are hopeful that this dynamic will encourage Stafford to continue playing for the team, particularly while their Super Bowl window remains open.
