Mason Greenwood Faces Boos on Return to English Ground
Former Manchester United forward heard jeers from Aston Villa fans during Fenerbahce's Champions League match.
Mason Greenwood was met with boos from Aston Villa supporters on Wednesday night, marking his first appearance on English soil since January 2022.
The 25-year-old forward, once considered a promising talent for Manchester United, has not played in England since his Old Trafford career ended following an arrest in connection with attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behavior. Charges were dropped in February 2023 when key witnesses withdrew their cooperation. Greenwood has denied any wrongdoing.
After leaving Manchester United in 2024, Greenwood had loan spells at Getafe and Marseille before completing a £36 million transfer to Turkish club Fenerbahce last summer. His return to an English football ground after more than four-and-a-half years was evident from the reception he received.
Greenwood was booed by parts of the crowd at Villa Park during the warm-up, with Fenerbahce's vocal support attempting to counteract the jeers. Similar reactions occurred when the teams were announced and during the early stages of the match, with audible catcalls accompanying each time Greenwood touched the ball.
Greenwood has one England cap, earned in a Nations League match against Iceland in September 2020. He is also eligible to play for Jamaica but declined a call-up last year. Prior to this match, he had scored six goals in 14 appearances for Fenerbahce.
This was not Greenwood's first encounter with Aston Villa. During a pre-season friendly against Marseille in August 2025, his shirt was partially torn by defender Tyrone Mings following an altercation with Villa midfielder Amadou Onana. Onana was absent from Wednesday's match due to injury.
