Mason Greenwood Faces Boos in First English Match in Over Four Years
The former Manchester United forward, playing for Fenerbahce, was met with audible disapproval from Aston Villa fans during a Champions League fixture.
Mason Greenwood was met with boos from Aston Villa fans as he played on English soil for the first time since January 2022. The former Manchester United player, now with Turkish club Fenerbahce, featured in a Champions League match at Villa Park on Wednesday night.
Greenwood, 25, had his career at Manchester United halted following his arrest in January 2022. He was accused of attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behavior. The charges were dropped in February 2023 after key witnesses withdrew. Greenwood has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
After leaving Manchester United in 2024, Greenwood had loan spells at Getafe and Marseille before joining Fenerbahce for a reported £36 million last summer. His appearance against Aston Villa marked his first time playing in England in over four and a half years.
The former United academy prospect was booed by sections of the crowd during the warm-up, with the noise from Fenerbahce supporters attempting to counter the jeers. Similar reactions occurred when the teams were announced and whenever Greenwood touched the ball during the early stages of the match.
Greenwood has one cap for England, earned in September 2020. He is also eligible to play for Jamaica but reportedly declined an offer to play for them last year. Prior to this match, he had scored six goals in 14 appearances for Fenerbahce.
This was not the first time Greenwood had been involved in an incident with an Aston Villa player. In August 2025, during a pre-season friendly against Marseille, his shirt was reportedly partially torn by Tyrone Mings following an altercation with Villa midfielder Amadou Onana. Onana was absent from Wednesday's match due to injury.
