Mason Crane Recalled by England for Pakistan Tri-Series

Leg-spinner Mason Crane has been recalled to the England squad for the upcoming one-day international tri-series in Pakistan, marking a potential return to international cricket for the first time in eight years. The 29-year-old, who last represented England in a Test match against Australia in Sydney in 2018 and played two T20 internationals in 2017, has an opportunity to feature in the series, which also includes Sri Lanka next month.

Crane's inclusion could also bolster his chances in the competition for the primary spinner role in Test cricket. Sam Curran and Adil Rashid are set to return after recovering from injuries. Additionally, uncapped players James Coles and Henry Crocombe have been included in the squad.

Jos Buttler will be absent due to a hamstring injury sustained last week, while Jacob Bethell continues his rehabilitation from knee surgery. Brydon Carse remains unavailable as he is under investigation by the Cricket Regulator following an incident outside a nightclub in Derby in August.

The England squad for the tri-series in Pakistan is: Harry Brook (Yorkshire – captain), Gus Atkinson (Surrey), Sonny Baker (Hampshire), Tom Banton (Somerset), James Coles (Sussex), Jordan Cox (Essex), Mason Crane (Glamorgan), Henry Crocombe (Sussex), Sam Curran (Surrey), Liam Dawson (Hampshire), Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire), Will Jacks (Surrey), Jamie Overton (Surrey), Adil Rashid (Yorkshire), Joe Root (Yorkshire), Josh Tongue (Nottinghamshire).

England's schedule until December is focused on white-ball cricket, leading up to three Test matches in South Africa. This period is part of the team's preparation for the 50-over World Cup scheduled for next year in southern Africa. Following the Pakistan tour, England will play three one-day internationals and five T20s against Australia in November.

In terms of coaching staff, Stephen Fleming has been appointed as Test coach. For the Pakistan tour, Jeetan Patel, Mike Yardy, David Saker, and Carl Hopkinson will support white-ball head coach Brendon McCullum. This means Marcus Trescothick, who temporarily led the Test team during the home series against Pakistan this summer, will not be traveling. The rotation of coaching staff is understood to be part of a broader strategy, with fielding coach Sarah Taylor and fast-bowling coach Tim Southee also not joining the Pakistan trip. Both Trescothick, Taylor, and Southee are expected to be part of England's coaching contingent for other tours later this winter.
