Mary Fowler's Withdrawal From Matildas Sparks Unhappiness Among Officials
Star player reportedly returned to Australia to be with injured boyfriend, leaving football administrators reportedly 'unimpressed' by the circumstances of her departure.
Matildas star Mary Fowler has reportedly returned to Australia to be with her injured boyfriend, Nathan Cleary, following her sudden withdrawal from international duty. Her absence from the upcoming friendlies against Germany and Haiti has left some senior football officials reportedly 'unimpressed' with the situation. Football Australia cited 'personal circumstances' for her departure, but has not provided further details.
Reports indicate Fowler was present at the Penrith Panthers' presentation night alongside Cleary, who is recovering from operations on both legs. Cleary sustained a fractured left fibula and dislocated ankle during a match in late September, requiring emergency surgery. He later underwent a second operation to address a stress fracture in his right foot.
While Fowler's decision is understood by some to be related to Cleary's injuries, neither the player nor Football Australia has confirmed this link. The federation stated that the decision followed discussions between Fowler, her club Manchester City, and Matildas staff. However, sources suggest that some senior Football Australia officials only became aware of the withdrawal through a statement released early Tuesday morning, leading to their reported dissatisfaction.
Matildas winger Hayley Raso acknowledged that she had not spoken to Fowler and had only recently learned of the news. "Obviously, Mary's a really valuable player for our team, so it's sad that she's not here at this camp, but obviously, she has to take care of some personal circumstances," Raso commented.
Fowler had recently marked her 100th appearance for Manchester City in a match against Arsenal, showing no apparent signs of injury. Her absence is a significant blow to coach Joe Montemurro as the team prepares for the next year's World Cup, with Fowler's role in the starting lineup still being determined.
The Matildas are scheduled to play Germany in Karlsruhe on October 10, followed by a match against Haiti in Chambly, France, on October 14. "There's not that many camps or matches before the World Cup, so every one is so important," Raso added. "Having a game against a top side like Germany is really important."
Cleary himself had publicly acknowledged Fowler's support during his Dally M Medal acceptance speech last week, stating, "It's tough doing the long distance, but she always makes me feel supported and loved, and that's all I've ever asked for, and she's just amazing."
Fans have speculated about the reasons for Fowler's withdrawal, with many expressing support for her decision to prioritize her personal life and relationship. This is not the first time Fowler has withdrawn from national duty; in November 2024, she also stepped away from fixtures against Brazil and Chinese Taipei, citing the need to recharge physically and mentally. At the time, she stated, "Playing for the national team is something that I never take for granted... I have, however, through past experiences, come to realise that my mind and my body are also things that I should also never take for granted."
