Martinez's Scathing Remarks Spark Fan Backlash Against Schmeichel's Interview Style

Manchester United fans have voiced their displeasure with former player Peter Schmeichel, accusing him of attempting to downplay Lisandro Martinez's sharp criticisms of the club's leadership. The incident occurred shortly after Martinez delivered a pointed critique of Manchester United's transfer market ambition following a 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid.

Martinez, speaking to CBS Sports after the match, directly addressed the club's board, questioning their commitment to building a competitive squad. "For me, we don't have the best squad," Martinez stated, citing a lack of depth as a contributing factor to the team's struggles. He emphasized the need for change, saying, "If we don't say the truth, nothing will change."

When Schmeichel attempted to pivot the conversation by noting that "the good news is that we're only in October, there's a long way to go," Martinez interrupted, reiterating his stance that "every season we are saying the same thing."

This exchange drew criticism from numerous fans on social media. Many felt Schmeichel was trying to find a positive angle rather than allowing Martinez's unfiltered assessment to stand. One fan posted, "Schmeichel was trying to look the positive but Martinez nah not today buddy." Another directly criticized the former goalkeeper's interview technique, stating, "Peter Schmeichel absolutely sucks at interviews btw."

A third commenter highlighted the contrast, writing, "Schmeichel: 'good news is we are only in October'. Licha (Martinez): 'every season we say the same thing'. This brother has gained all my respect." Some fans expressed suspicion that former United players, including pundits like Schmeichel, may be reluctant to openly criticize the club, with one suggesting, "Look at Schmeichel trying to shift the conversation elsewhere. Another one that has been compromised!"

Martinez had previously spoken to Amazon Prime, expressing frustration with the club's management and technical director Jason Wilcox. He questioned the focus on changing managers rather than addressing other areas of the club's structure. "What about other areas? Tonight it is easy to say the coach and easy to say the players, but also we have to see other areas," Martinez said, adding, "I expect more (investment) 100 per cent. I expect more from our technical director."

Adding to the team's turmoil, player Amad Diallo posted a message on Snapchat after the loss, writing, "F***ing disgrace, I have no words," although it was unclear if his comment was directed at the team's performance, Martinez's remarks, or another grievance.
