Martinez Expects Quick Return After Surgery
Chelsea's Emiliano Martinez optimistic about recovery timeline following injury.
Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has expressed optimism about his recovery following surgery, stating he anticipates being fit to play again within a few weeks. The 34-year-old Argentina international underwent an operation after sustaining an injury during Chelsea's 2-0 Premier League victory over Everton on Saturday.
Martinez collided with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite in the second half of the match and required extensive treatment on the pitch before being carried off on a stretcher. He was subsequently taken to a hospital, and manager Xabi Alonso confirmed he had suffered a concussion.
On Sunday, Martinez, wearing a hospital gown, shared an update on social media, thanking supporters for their messages and confirming the successful outcome of his operation. "The operation went well," he posted. "The most important thing is that we won, and kept a clean sheet. In a few weeks we'll be back."
With Martinez sidelined, Mike Penders, who replaced him to make his Premier League debut against Everton, is now expected to be Chelsea's primary goalkeeper for at least the next three fixtures. These include upcoming Premier League matches against Tottenham and Manchester United, with a Carabao Cup tie against Liverpool scheduled in between.
Penders, 21, joined Chelsea from Belgian club Genk for £17 million in 2024. Manager Xabi Alonso expressed confidence in Penders, noting his personality and bravery. "Mike has personality. He's brave and we have full trust with him. He did well when he came on," Alonso said. "He played in the cup games and whenever he's needed. Like the other players, whenever they are needed they can perform. It's all about the squad - that all the players feel important and can have their moment whenever they are needed, that's very positive."
