Mark Wood Retires from International Cricket

England fast bowler Mark Wood has announced his immediate retirement from international cricket, citing persistent injuries that have made Test and 50-over formats impossible.

The 36-year-old Durham paceman, renowned as one of England's fastest bowlers, has struggled with a series of physical ailments throughout his career, including issues with his ankle, knee, and elbow. Wood most recently returned to action in the first Ashes Test in Perth in November after a 15-month layoff due to elbow surgery and subsequent knee surgery. However, his participation was cut short by swelling in the same knee, leading to his departure for treatment and no further England appearances since.

"Although this may not come as a surprise given the past year, it just feels like a natural time at the end of my contract," Wood stated on social media. "I've always tried to be resilient and come back from injury to prove people wrong and show everyone what I can do. Unfortunately, this time I lost the battle."

Wood concludes his international career having taken 119 wickets in 38 Test matches since his debut in 2015. He was part of the England team that won back the Ashes on home soil in 2015. To manage the physical demands on his body, Wood altered his run-up in 2018, a change that did not diminish his pace and allowed him to contribute significantly to England's successes in recent years. He was a member of the squad that won the 2019 50-over World Cup, where he took 18 wickets, and also the T20 World Cup-winning team in 2022. In the 2023 Ashes, his return to the side and strong bowling performances were instrumental in England leveling the series after trailing by two games.

"Playing for England has been the greatest honour I could have ever wished for and a dream come true," Wood added.
