Mark van Bommel has been appointed as the new head coach of the Belgian national football team, signing a contract that will keep him in the role through Euro 2028. The appointment follows the departure of Rudi Garcia, whose tenure concluded after Belgium's exit from the 2026 World Cup.

Van Bommel, 49, most recently led Royal Antwerp, securing a league title, a Belgian Cup, and a Belgian Super Cup during his two-year period with the club. He is set to officially begin his duties on August 15.

"It is a great honour to become head coach of Belgium," Van Bommel stated. "Belgium has outstanding players and enormous potential. Together with my coaching staff, we want to build a team that is disciplined, ambitious and brave enough to compete with the very best."

Vincent Mannaert, the Belgian Football Association's sporting director, highlighted Van Bommel's experience. "His international experience as both a coach and player will help the Red Devils continue to improve, achieve results and reach their full potential," Mannaert said.

Van Bommel's coaching staff will include Boudewijn Zenden, Maarten Martens, and Reinier Robbemond. One of his initial responsibilities will be to guide the team through Nations League matches against Italy, France, and Turkey in September and October.
