A 1990-91 NBA Hoops card showcasing the former Knicks guard Mark Jackson includes an unexpected cameo from Erik and Lyle Menendez, who were later convicted of their parents' murder.
A seemingly ordinary sports collectible has surfaced with a dark and notorious detail: a 1990-91 NBA Hoops trading card featuring Mark Jackson, then a point guard for the New York Knicks, also captured Erik and Lyle Menendez sitting courtside. The card's discovery was highlighted by sports business analyst Darren Rovell, who shared the find during an appearance on The Craig Carton Show.
The image on the card depicts a game between the Los Angeles Clippers and the Knicks. In the background, seated in lower bowl seats, are the Menendez brothers. Significantly, the card was produced after the brothers had committed the murders of their parents, allegedly using proceeds from a life-insurance policy to purchase tickets.
Rovell, a collector himself, presented the framed card to Carton, pointing out an inscription that reads, "Valid: Menendez brothers sit courtside." Carton expressed surprise at the revelation, having not been familiar with this particular piece of sports memorabilia lore.
Erik and Lyle Menendez were convicted of first-degree murder in the 1989 killings of their parents. They are currently serving sentences of 50 years to life. The brothers were denied parole in 2025, and their next parole hearing is scheduled for March 2027.
The presence of the Menendez brothers at the game, captured in a moment that would later become a widely discussed detail in sports collecting, serves as a peculiar footnote in both sports history and true crime.
