Mark Allen Contemplates Snooker Retirement

Mark Allen is contemplating retirement from professional snooker, a decision he has been considering for some time. The 40-year-old Northern Irish player revealed his thoughts following a 4-2 loss to Jordan Brown at the Northern Ireland Open.

Allen, who turned professional in 2005, has had a successful career, amassing 12 ranking tournament titles, including the prestigious UK Championship in 2022. However, the past year has presented significant challenges.

A particularly difficult moment came in May during the World Championship semi-final, where Allen missed a crucial black ball in the penultimate frame that could have propelled him into his first World Championship final. He went on to lose that match to eventual champion Yize and has since been less active on the World Snooker Tour circuit.

"The last three months have been really, really difficult and I think even just being here today is an achievement," Allen stated. "For me, today was not about the result or the performance, it was trying to enjoy the experience of playing one of my best mates in one of my favourite arenas, in one of my favourite tournaments."

While he has not made a definitive announcement regarding retirement, Allen emphasized the need for change. "I am not going to announce it [retirement] right now after a defeat but it is something I have been contemplating for a while and something needs to change within the next six weeks before the UK Championship for me to show up and I need to work hard on myself in the next few weeks and see what is around the corner."
