Marina Mabrey of the Toronto Tempo matched the WNBA scoring record with a career-high 53 points in a 125-97 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks on Thursday night.
Mabrey's performance tied the record previously set by Liz Cambage for Dallas in 2018 and equaled by A’ja Wilson for Las Vegas in 2023. She shot 17 of 28 from the field, including nine three-pointers on 18 attempts, and made 10 of 12 free throws.
Fans in Toronto briefly booed when Mabrey was substituted out with a minute remaining, but the reaction quickly turned to cheers. Chants of “We Want Mabrey!” could be heard as the game concluded.
The 29-year-old former Notre Dame star also shattered the expansion Tempo's previous single-game scoring record of 38 points, a mark previously achieved twice by Brittney Sykes.
Julie Allemand contributed 13 points and 14 assists for Toronto, which secured its ninth win of the season to reach a .500 record at 9-9. The Sparks fell to 8-9 with the loss.
Nneka Ogwumike and Dearica Hamby each scored 21 points for the Sparks. The Tempo's win marked the highest-scoring game in the team's brief history and began a nine-game homestand that includes two games in Montreal.
