Maresca Faces Key Challenges as Manchester City's Form Dips
After an initial winning streak, Enzo Maresca's Manchester City has suffered consecutive league defeats, highlighting issues in defense, midfield, and attack.
Enzo Maresca's promising start as Manchester City manager has hit a significant roadblock, with the team suffering back-to-back Premier League defeats. After winning his first seven league games, Maresca's side lost to Aston Villa and then fell 1-0 at home to Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, ending a streak of 23 consecutive league games in which City had scored.
Maresca acknowledged the unusual nature of the results, stating, "It is the same feeling as after Aston Villa away. We did enough to deserve something more but we have to move on and try to win games." He added that the team created "a good volume of offensive action" and that the "attitude was good," with players fighting until the end.
Defensive Frailties
City has conceded 10 goals in nine league games this season, double the number of goals conceded by title rivals Arsenal. Individual errors at the back have been costly, with players being identified as culpable in recent matches. This defensive vulnerability has contributed to City keeping only one clean sheet in their last eight games across all competitions. The loss to Brighton marked the first time City has lost consecutive Premier League games in 14 months.
Maresca addressed the issue of individual errors, saying, "Sometimes it happens. Unfortunately, it is happening for our players but I think it is part of the game, part of football, it happens many times against us. We need to analyse, understand what we can do better and try to move on."
Midfield Combinations
The team's midfield has also seen significant investment following the departures of key players. Maresca appears to still be searching for the optimal midfield combination, having spent considerable sums on new signings in the summer. For the Brighton match, he opted to start with three physical midfielders, a decision he explained as a response to Brighton's aggressive, man-to-man style and with plans to refresh the midfield later in the game.
Attacking Inefficiency
Despite creating numerous chances, City has struggled to be clinical in attack. The 21 shots taken against Brighton were the most they have had at home without scoring since November 2024. In their last two league matches, City scored only one goal from nine big chances created. Erling Haaland was reportedly starved of service against Brighton, and Iliman Ndiaye missed key opportunities. "I think also in this moment we are the second team in terms of scoring in the Premier League," Maresca noted. "That means we are scoring goals but in this moment we are conceding silly goals that we can avoid and hopefully we can avoid in the next game."
City's next challenge comes on Wednesday against RB Leipzig in the Champions League, where they will aim to halt their recent run of defeats.
