Marcus Spears Jr., the top-ranked prospect in the 2027 high school basketball class, has reclassified and committed to play for the Texas Longhorns starting in the 2026-27 season. The announcement was reported by ESPN on Thursday.
Spears, a 17-year-old forward from Texas, had drawn interest from other prominent college programs including LSU, Arizona, and Kentucky. He cited his connection to the Texas program and head coach Sean Miller as key factors in his decision.
"I got along with him, very well," Spears told ESPN. "He showed me everything about the program and knew my game. He explained my position and explained his plan for me. He is laid back off the court, but on the court he will get into you and get the most out of me."
Spears, the son of former NFL defensive end and current ESPN analyst Marcus Spears, expressed enthusiasm about joining the Longhorns. "Texas basketball is becoming a big thing again," he said. "Fans of the program can expect a worker with a lot of energy."
His commitment significantly bolsters the Longhorns' recruiting class, elevating it to No. 4 nationally, according to ESPN. Texas has also added players David Punch and Isaiah Johnson through the transfer portal, further strengthening the team for the upcoming seasons.
Spears acknowledged the expectations that come with his status as a top recruit. "I’m going to have to work for everything I get," Spears stated. "My focus is to stick to the work that has gotten me to this point."
His sister is also a member of the Longhorns volleyball team, adding another personal connection to the university.
