Manchester United Teenager JJ Gabriel Flies to Barcelona for Talks Amid Transfer Speculation

Manchester United's highly-rated young prospect JJ Gabriel, 15, has traveled to Barcelona for discussions with the Spanish club, fueling speculation about a potential transfer. Gabriel recently informed Manchester United of his intention to leave, and Barcelona has emerged as a leading contender for his signature, with Real Madrid also reportedly interested.

Barcelona has shown interest in Gabriel for some time. He previously visited the club's facilities in August 2024, where he met Lamine Yamal, a fellow young star, and posed for a photograph. Gabriel has not been seen at Manchester United since scoring a hat-trick for the Under-21 team in his UEFA Youth League debut against Sabah.

Gabriel, who joined Manchester United at age 11, is considered one of Europe's most promising young players. While English players typically cannot move abroad until age 18, Gabriel is eligible to join a European team at 16 due to holding an Irish passport.

Gabriel was expected to sign a first-year scholarship with Manchester United upon turning 16, which would have led to a professional contract on his 17th birthday. However, the winger has requested that the club terminate his current contract, which is set to expire at the end of the season.

Manchester United has thus far declined this request. Head coach Michael Carrick addressed the situation on Friday, emphasizing that the player's well-being is the top priority. "He's a young boy, JJ, and I think it's important that we certainly don't play anything out here," Carrick stated. "I think the exposure and the scrutiny and everything, you’ve got to be careful and be sensible and think of him as much as anything. So the situation will work itself out, whatever way it's going to work itself out. Making sure he's okay is the important thing."
