Manchester United Seeks Fan Input on £2 Billion Stadium Redesign

Manchester United has initiated a fan survey to gather opinions on the club's proposed £2 billion stadium project, suggesting that the controversial 'circus tent' design unveiled last year may not be finalized.

Supporters have a two-week period to participate in the survey, which aims to collect feedback on key areas such as creating a world-class stadium and match-day experience, preserving the club's heritage, enhancing atmosphere, improving the surrounding area, and stadium accessibility.

This initiative follows a September 2024 survey of 50,000 fans, where 52 percent favored the construction of a new 100,000-seater stadium. In response, Foster + Partners were commissioned to design a new venue, which was subsequently revealed with a futuristic concept compared to a circus tent.

Although Foster + Partners have been formally appointed as architects, Collette Roche, Manchester United's CEO of new stadium development, stated in July that the design remained flexible. Sources have confirmed that the initial concept was exploratory, and the club is now engaged in the design process with a commitment to incorporating fan perspectives.

The survey will be distributed to season ticket holders, cup season ticket holders, executive club members, official members, and hospitality purchasers from the past three years. Roche emphasized the importance of fan involvement, stating, "Our proposed new stadium is one of the most significant projects Manchester United will undertake in the next 100 years, and it is vital that we shape it together with our fans."

She added, "Above all else, this is a football stadium built for them, so getting the details right matters. That’s why we are committed to thorough and transparent engagement, ensuring supporters help inform key decisions on atmosphere, affordability, accessibility and the traditions that have made Old Trafford so special for so long."

Roche also acknowledged the enthusiasm for a new stadium while recognizing potential fan concerns. "Our engagement with supporters since 2024 has shown there is genuine excitement about the prospect of a new stadium, but we also recognise that some fans will have important questions and concerns. Listening to those views and ensuring they are shaping the design is a vital part of the process. By working together, we can create a world-class football stadium that supports success on the pitch, reflects the identity of Manchester United, and gives fans a home they can be proud of for generations to come."

The comprehensive stadium rebuild and regeneration project is projected to contribute significantly to the local and national economy, including the creation of approximately 15,000 new homes, a portion of which will be affordable, and the generation of 48,000 local jobs and over 90,000 nationally, with an estimated annual economic boost of more than £7 billion to the UK economy.
