Manchester United Faces Internal Scrutiny After Martinez's Transfer Criticism
Club bosses are weighing their response to Lisandro Martinez's public critique of the team's transfer policy, which emerged following a Champions League loss.
Manchester United's leadership is reportedly considering how to address defender Lisandro Martinez's strong criticisms of the club's transfer strategy. The comments, made during a television interview after the team's 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid, have put the club in an uncomfortable position.
Martinez directly accused the Old Trafford board and director of football Jason Wilcox of failing to adequately strengthen the squad in the previous summer transfer window. His remarks came after the team flew back from Madrid, with the players having been given Wednesday off. They are scheduled to return to training on Thursday in preparation for their upcoming match against Leeds.
Adding to the internal tension, teammate Amad Diallo posted a social media message stating, ‘f***ing disgrace, I have no words,’ although the specific target of his comment remains unclear. This incident follows a pattern of public discontent, as former head coach Ruben Amorim was dismissed in January after publicly criticizing Wilcox.
Martinez, whose contract is set to expire in eight months, has become a key player for Manchester United since his £48.5 million transfer from Ajax. While the club has the option to extend his contract by an additional year or offer new terms, they are reportedly reluctant to lose the 28-year-old World Cup winner as a free agent. Triggering the extension would allow the club to command a transfer fee should he depart.
In his post-match interview, Martinez stated, “I don’t think so,” when asked if the club had sufficiently backed manager Michael Carrick. He emphasized the need for consistency in management and pointed to other areas of the club needing attention. “I expect more (investment) 100 per cent. I expect more from our technical director,” Martinez said, acknowledging that while players must also perform better, a stronger squad is crucial for success on nights like the one in Madrid. He added that his comments were a “reflection of the mirror of how is our club at the moment.”
The team is facing several defensive injuries, with Luke Shaw, Patrick Dorgu, and Noussair Mazraoui currently sidelined. Matthijs De Ligt recently returned to the bench as an unused substitute after a year-long absence due to a back injury, potentially necessitating Martinez's presence in the defense for the upcoming fixture against Leeds at Elland Road.
