Manchester United Eyeing Dominic Calvert-Lewin Amid Striker Shortage
Club explores shock move for Leeds forward as Benjamin Sesko faces extended absence.
Manchester United is reportedly considering a surprising transfer move for Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin as the club intensifies its search for attacking reinforcements in January. The potential transfer is viewed as difficult due to the significant rivalry between the two clubs, according to Daily Mail Sport.
Calvert-Lewin has experienced a career resurgence at Leeds since joining on a free transfer in the summer of 2025. This move followed an injury-plagued period at Everton. The 29-year-old forward has scored 20 goals in 49 appearances for Leeds, including five goals in ten games this season. He notably scored against Manchester United in their recent 1-1 draw. His form also earned him an England recall, ending a five-year hiatus from the national team.
The forward is currently under contract with Leeds until 2028. His availability is being assessed as Manchester United faces a striker crisis. Benjamin Sesko, the club's recognized center-forward, has been ruled out until at least January with a shin injury. The 23-year-old had been managing the issue since the beginning of the season, and efforts to keep him fit have been unsuccessful.
Sesko has not played for the club since the Carabao Cup defeat against Brighton on September 16, having been substituted in the 66th minute. He missed the entire pre-season campaign with the same complaint, which also affected him last season and led to him missing the final three Premier League games. His withdrawal from international duty last month further emphasized the severity of the injury, dealing a significant blow to United during a challenging period and leaving manager Michael Carrick without a fit senior striker.
In Sesko's absence, right winger Bryan Mbeumo has been filling the striker role, starting the last five matches across all competitions. Carrick appears to have lost confidence in forward Joshua Zirkzee.
The historical context of transfers between the two clubs includes notable names. Eric Cantona moved from Leeds to Manchester United in November 1992, a transfer widely credited with helping to transform United into title winners. Rio Ferdinand followed in July 2002 for a then-record British transfer fee of £30 million, amid concerns over Leeds' financial situation. Alan Smith, a lifelong Leeds fan, made the £7 million move in May 2004, shortly after Leeds' relegation to the Championship, a move that initially angered fans but was also seen as aiding the club's financial recovery. More recently, goalkeeper Karl Darlow transferred from Leeds to Manchester United in July 2026, marking the first player movement between the clubs since Smith's transfer. Daniel James moved from Manchester United to Leeds in a £25 million transfer in 2021, and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson was part of a rare loan deal in 2017.
