Manchester United Brass Hold Crisis Talks Amid Michael Carrick's Mounting Pressure
Club executives met to discuss the head coach's future following a poor run of results, including a recent home defeat.
Michael Carrick remains in a precarious position as Manchester United head coach following a day of crisis talks involving the club's ownership and senior executives. The discussions were prompted by the team's recent 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth, which left United just one point above the Premier League relegation zone.
Chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox were present at the club's Carrington training ground on Monday. It is understood they held conference calls with minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co-chairmen Joel and Avram Glazer. A definitive decision on Carrick's tenure has not yet been announced, leaving uncertainty about whether he will lead training on Tuesday morning ahead of the upcoming match against Chelsea.
While the squad had Monday off following the Bournemouth loss, Carrick reported to Carrington to observe a behind-closed-doors match involving fringe players and youth team members. Berrada and Wilcox reportedly discussed Carrick's future elsewhere at the complex during this period. It remains unclear if Carrick, 45, communicated with them during his three-hour stay.
Amidst the uncertainty, midfielder Bruno Fernandes was also at Carrington for treatment, along with other players. This appearance came a day after Carrick notably dropped Fernandes, his captain, to the bench for the Bournemouth game. Carrick stated the decision was purely tactical, though it followed Fernandes' public criticism of United's strategy after a Champions League loss in Italy.
Fernandes appeared to respond indirectly to the situation by 'liking' an Instagram post that read: 'Never push a loyal person to the point where they no longer care.'
Carrick's position is under intense scrutiny, having lost half of his 12 games this season. Manchester United are experiencing their worst league start in 40 years and have failed to win in eight consecutive matches, a streak not seen since 2015.
Following the Bournemouth defeat, Carrick was visibly emotional, acknowledging the fans' support while directing their frustration towards the ownership and players. He had previously appeared to bid farewell to supporters, though he later clarified this was not the case. This followed a public apology to traveling fans after a previous loss.
With Manchester United eliminated from the Carabao Cup and no midweek fixture, the team has a full week to prepare for their trip to Stamford Bridge. Carrick has 18 months remaining on his two-year contract, which he signed in May after guiding the club back into the Champions League.
Reports suggest that Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann, both currently unattached, are considered leading candidates should the club opt for a change in head coach. Bookmakers have reportedly stopped taking bets on Carrick's dismissal. Howe, having left Newcastle in the summer, would require United to pay approximately £3 million in compensation to his former club, in addition to any severance package for Carrick and his staff.
