Manchester United Backing Manager Michael Carrick Amidst Growing Criticism

Manchester United is set to retain interim manager Michael Carrick for their upcoming Premier League fixture against Bournemouth, signaling a commitment to stability despite significant pressure following recent poor results. Club sources have indicated that it is 'business as usual' for Carrick, who is expected to lead the team into Sunday's match at Old Trafford.

This decision comes in the wake of a significant 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como in Italy, which marked Manchester United's heaviest loss in European competition since 1994. The team has also experienced its worst league start in 40 years. Despite these setbacks, the club is reportedly resisting the urge to make an immediate change in management.

Carrick is scheduled to address the media on Friday, a move seen as a strong indicator that the club plans to stand by him, at least for the short term. This approach also allows the club time to consider potential replacements should they decide to part ways with Carrick. Names such as Julian Nagelsmann, Antonio Conte, Fabian Hurzeler, and Kieran McKenna have been mentioned as early candidates.

Adding to the scrutiny, captain Bruno Fernandes has openly questioned Carrick's tactics. Following the loss to Como, Fernandes suggested that the team's strategy of not pressing aggressively left space behind, which opposing teams exploited. When pressed on whether Carrick's tactics were at fault, Fernandes deferred, stating, "That's on the manager and staff to say, not me."

Carrick, when informed of Fernandes' comments, responded by implying that his players were not willing to put in sufficient effort.

Furthermore, Fernandes offered more critical remarks in an interview with Italian media after the match. He suggested that Manchester United has become overly focused on its past glories, hindering its progress in the present. "Everyone at the club needs to understand that things aren’t the same anymore; we’re not in the past, and we have to look to the future," Fernandes stated. He added that the club and players need to acknowledge the current reality and create a new path forward, noting the difficulty the club has faced in achieving success in recent years.

Fernandes told Italian media post-match that Man United are too focused on 'what's been done in the past'

Reports indicated that a Manchester United press officer initially seemed hesitant for Fernandes to speak in Italian, possibly due to concerns about the message being misunderstood.

After the defeat, Carrick accepted full responsibility for the team's performance. "I'm more than frustrated, I'm really angry, to be honest," he said. "But you got to move on. You’ve got to deal with what's next and see what that looks like." He emphasized the need to prepare the team for the next game, acknowledging the difficult night for everyone involved. "I take one hundred per cent responsibility for the overall team and the performance. It stops with me and I'm absolutely fine with that. I accept that totally," Carrick stated.

However, he also stressed that the focus should not be on him but on the club and its supporters, stating, "The results can come and go at times, but you’ve got to do it in a certain way – and that wasn't it."

Manchester United faces a challenging schedule ahead, with matches against Chelsea, Roma, and Aston Villa before an international break next month.
