Manchester City has reached an agreement to sign Argentine goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli from Marseille for £1.7 million. Rulli, who previously spent the 2016-17 season at the Etihad Stadium without a first-team appearance, has signed a two-year contract.
Rulli brings a notable Europa League final penalty shootout save to his resume, famously scoring a penalty for Villarreal against Manchester United in the 2021 final and then saving David de Gea's subsequent attempt to secure the victory. He has earned eight caps for Argentina and was part of the squads that won the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Copa America.
Throughout his career, Rulli has played for clubs across Europe, including Real Sociedad, Montpellier, and Ajax. His arrival at Manchester City is intended to replace James Trafford, who recently transferred to Leeds United in a deal potentially worth up to £45 million. Rulli will serve as the understudy to the club's primary goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma.
