Manchester City's Defensive Frailties Exposed in Aston Villa Loss
Errors from goalkeeper Donnarumma and defender Guehi highlight significant backline concerns for Enzo Maresca's side.
Manchester City's perfect start to the Premier League season was halted by Aston Villa, who secured a 2-1 victory, exposing notable defensive issues for manager Enzo Maresca.
Nicolas Jackson scored twice for Villa, marking the latest in a string of games where City has struggled to maintain a clean sheet, having recorded only one in their last six matches. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and defender Marc Guehi have been identified as particular areas of concern. Since the beginning of the previous season, both Donnarumma and Guehi have each made three errors that directly led to Premier League goals, a statistic placing them among the top eight players in this regard.
City's most recent shutout occurred two weeks prior against Liverpool, but in the matches surrounding that result, they have conceded goals against a range of opponents, from Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain to struggling teams like Sunderland. Manager Enzo Maresca acknowledged that both goals conceded against Villa were avoidable. "Sometimes you have to be a bit more lucky because we only conceded those two chances, but we created a lot of chances," Maresca stated. "We played most of the game in their box but you have to be clinical and avoid mistakes like the two goals we conceded."
The loss to Villa ended City's seven-game winning streak to start the current campaign. While City conceded eight goals in their first nine games of the season, their defensive record has since deteriorated, with nine goals conceded in their last four matches.
Donnarumma's arrival last summer was intended to bolster the goalkeeping position, replacing Ederson, whose distribution skills were a hallmark of City's play. However, Donnarumma has shown difficulty with his footwork, occasionally putting teammates in difficult positions with passes from the back. In the match against Villa, captain Ruben Dias was observed gesturing for Donnarumma to clear the ball forward rather than attempt a pass out from defense.
In contrast, James Trafford, sold to Leeds United for £45 million in the summer, has been performing well. Trafford has made more passes than Donnarumma this season, boasts a slightly better goal-prevention record, and has actively swept up loose balls more frequently. While Donnarumma could not have done much about Jackson's powerful opening goal, the second goal, a low shot that appeared to go under him, has drawn criticism. Former City defender Steph Houghton noted on BBC Radio 5 Live that Donnarumma "could probably have done a little bit better" with the second goal.
Marc Guehi's £20 million transfer from Crystal Palace in January was initially seen as a good deal. However, his form this season has been inconsistent. A misplaced pass from Guehi late last season against Everton contributed to a draw that impacted City's title race momentum. This season, he has been implicated in goals conceded against Ipswich Town and was outmaneuvered by John McGinn for Villa's first goal. He was later substituted at halftime, partly due to receiving a yellow card.
Maresca has been experimenting with defensive combinations, with Rico Lewis being moved to cover for Guehi at times. The manager acknowledged the need to "find that balance" in the defense. Despite Guehi's recent struggles, Maresca expressed no concern, citing the player's constant involvement with both club and country and the tactical decision to remove him due to the yellow card. "The way we want to be aggressive sometimes, to have one yellow card can be dangerous but I am not worried at all," Maresca said.
City faces a challenging upcoming schedule, with two matches against high-scoring Brighton & Hove Albion next week, including a Carabao Cup tie and a Premier League fixture. Maresca needs to address these defensive vulnerabilities to prevent them from escalating into a more significant problem.
