Manchester City Navigates Early Season Demands

Manchester City has made an impressive start to their Women's Super League (WSL) season, winning every match played and remaining undefeated in European competition. This early success has been bolstered by significant squad depth, with manager Gareth Jeglertz yet to field the same starting lineup in any game. This ability to rotate has not disrupted the team's rhythm, with substitutions frequently impacting matches positively.

Jeglertz highlighted the effectiveness of his substitutions following a 4-2 victory over Arsenal, noting that changes made in the latter half of games have often been decisive. "The ones that have come in, no matter who it is, have always affected it in a good way," he stated. This strategic use of the five allowed substitutions per match has been a key factor in their ability to secure points even when falling behind.

Historically, Manchester City has faced challenges balancing domestic and European aspirations. After finishing as WSL runners-up in 2019 and 2020, they failed to advance beyond the last 16 in Europe. While they reached the quarter-finals in 2021, the following two seasons saw them drop to third and then fourth in the WSL standings and fall in the Champions League qualifying stages, a trend they are determined to avoid repeating.

Despite facing strong opposition in their opening Champions League fixtures, including draws against Bayern Munich and Real Madrid where they came from behind, the team acknowledges that these results are not yet at their desired standard. "We have played two teams that are definitely at a very high level. If you want to go far in the tournament, you also need to win these games," said Jeglertz. He described the start as "OK" but not "ideal," emphasizing the need for a complete 90-minute performance.

The team's resilience is evident in their WSL campaign, where they have earned six points from losing positions, more than any other team. Of the 16 goals scored in the WSL this season, 10 have come in the second half. Players like Kerstin Casparij, Khadija Shaw, and Yui Hasegawa have seen fewer minutes early in the season compared to last year, indicating effective rotation.

USA international Sam Coffey, a crucial midfielder, has featured in every game but has only completed 90 minutes once. Casparij, the vice-captain, demonstrated the impact of coming off the bench when she scored the go-ahead goal against Arsenal in the 63rd minute. "That's what Andree does. He's really clear with us and it allows me to play my game, trust my instinct, trust my gut and play with a lot of freedom," Casparij commented on the manager's approach.

Despite an encouraging start, Manchester City recognizes the long road ahead in both competitions. The team is managing several injuries, with players like Vivianne Miedema and Sydney Lohmann recovering. The addition of Sam Coffey picking up a knock further highlights the importance of their squad depth and mentality for the remainder of the season. "Nothing is won yet but we have to keep up this mentality," Casparij added.
