Manchester City has initiated discussions with Liverpool regarding a potential transfer for forward Cody Gakpo. The 27-year-old Dutch international has expressed his desire to join City if he is to leave Liverpool, with Tottenham Hotspur also reportedly showing interest.
Liverpool has indicated that they would need to secure at least two additional forward players before considering the departure of Gakpo. The club also seeks a substantial transfer fee, given that Gakpo signed a long-term contract extension last year, committing him until 2030.
The Reds are nearing the completion of a £123 million deal for Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain, who primarily plays on the left wing, a position frequently occupied by Gakpo. Gakpo joined Liverpool in 2023 for £44 million and has since scored 51 goals in 182 appearances. He scored in the team's opening match of the current season and provided an assist in a recent game against Nottingham Forest.
Manchester City is seeking a new wide player after selling Savio to Tottenham for £85 million. Considering the fee received for Savio and Gakpo's established productivity, Liverpool is expected to drive a hard bargain for the player. Gakpo experienced a less impactful season previously, but during Liverpool's 2024-25 Premier League title-winning campaign, he recorded 18 goals across all competitions.
