Manchester City Fans Accuse Premier League of Erasure Following Financial Charges
Supporters cite the omission of key club moments from official league videos as evidence of an attempt to 'airbrush' the club.
Manchester City fans have voiced anger and accused the Premier League of attempting to "airbrush" the club from its online content following the recent guilty verdict on financial rule breaches. The accusations stem from the perceived absence of Manchester City from two prominent official Premier League videos released this week.
The Premier League found Manchester City guilty of numerous financial rule breaches over a nine-year period, a verdict revealed last Tuesday. The club is currently undertaking an appeal process, while both the league and the club have maintained strong positions regarding their stances.
Fans have pointed to a compilation of "goals that sent the stadium into a frenzy" uploaded to YouTube, which featured memorable moments from 13 different clubs. However, notable omissions included Vincent Kompany's decisive long-range strike against Leicester City in 2019 and Sergio Agüero's iconic 93rd-minute title-winning goal in 2012. The video did include goals from rivals such as Michael Owen's derby winner for Manchester United in 2009, Declan Rice's first goal for Arsenal, and a Liverpool winner at St James' Park.
A separate video compiling "tearful goodbyes" from club legends also drew criticism. The montage featured emotional farewells from players like Steven Gerrard, John Terry, Mohamed Salah, and Wayne Rooney. City supporters argue that the video failed to acknowledge similarly emotional departures from key Manchester City players such as Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, and John Stones in recent seasons. The Premier League has declined to comment on the matter.
