Manchester City Capitalizes on Arsenal's Loss, Extends Winning Streak

Manchester City enters the international break with a perfect record after a commanding 5-3 victory over Sunderland, capitalizing on Arsenal's unexpected defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion. The win extends City's winning streak to seven matches across all competitions and places them three points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Manager Enzo Maresca, who took the helm from Pep Guardiola, has guided City to an exceptional start, becoming only the sixth Premier League manager to win his first five league games. This mirrors the achievement of his predecessor, Guardiola, who accomplished the same feat in 2016.

Despite Maresca's prior assessment of the match as City's toughest test of the season, the team ultimately found a way to secure three points. "I prefer to win 1-0 than 5-3 but I expected a very difficult game," Maresca stated after the match. "I knew how good they are, off the ball very aggressive and on the ball they have different weapons, set-pieces and [Brian] Brobbey."

The victory saw notable individual performances, including two goals and an assist from Antoine Semenyo, a strong showing from Rayan Cherki, and Enzo Fernandez scoring his first goal for the club. Erling Haaland's late goal marked him as having scored against all 25 Premier League teams he has faced.

However, the defensive performance raised concerns for Maresca, as City conceded three goals at home after shipping only two in their previous four league fixtures. Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey achieved the rare feat of scoring a hat-trick in a losing effort, with the visiting side registering an expected goals (xG) tally of 4.25, the highest recorded for a visiting team at the Etihad Stadium.

"I am always concerned, always trying to see what we can do better. For sure, two of the three goals we conceded were too easy," Maresca commented. "The second coming from a quick [Granit] Xhaka free-kick and that cannot happen. The third goal comes from another free-kick, too easy in that way."

Charlie Adam, a former Liverpool midfielder, described City's start as "brilliant" but noted areas for improvement. "A lot to work on but [positive] to score five goals at home and have shown that level of performance," he told BBC Radio 5 Live. "With Arsenal losing on Saturday, [City] could have gone into the break top of the table and they have done that today."

City faces a significant challenge upon returning from the international break with a trip to face undefeated Liverpool on October 11.
