Rangers defender Olwethu Makhanya revealed that his mother's unwavering encouragement was instrumental in him continuing his football career after facing significant setbacks in his native South Africa. At 16 years old, Makhanya left his home in Durban to pursue opportunities in Johannesburg, but encountered persistent rejection from multiple clubs.
His motivation began to fade, leading him to consider returning home and focusing on education. However, his mother urged him to persevere. "She just said, ‘you told me you were going there so don’t come back until you do it’," Makhanya recalled. Despite having the funds to return, he chose to use his money to travel to another city, Polokwane, where he ultimately signed his first professional contract at academy level.
Makhanya believes that without his mother's resolute advice, he might not still be playing football. Following his breakthrough in Polokwane, he moved to Stellenbosch FC, gaining first-team experience and earning the most promising player award in the Nedbank Cup within a single season. This success led to a transfer to the Philadelphia Union in Major League Soccer.
During his three years in the United States, Makhanya regularly competed against notable players like Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba. He has now transitioned to playing in Europe with Rangers, a move he described as significant due to the club's history, passionate fanbase, and high expectations.
Makhanya, 22, has made a positive early impression in Scotland, demonstrating physicality, speed, and comfort on the ball. He feels he has settled in well and maintained a belief in his ability to perform at a higher level.
While Rangers have faced challenges with scoring goals, particularly in the absence of key forwards, their defense has shown improvement. After failing to keep a clean sheet in their first five matches of the season, the team has secured narrow wins in their last four games, conceding only one goal. The upcoming match against Celtic is anticipated to be a rigorous test for the team's improved defensive stability.
Makhanya emphasized the importance of team unity, noting the contributions of all players, including those who are not currently starting. He highlighted the team's efforts to build camaraderie off the field, which he believes has contributed to their recent performances.
He also acknowledged the significance of the fixture against Celtic, stating that everyone at the club understands its importance to both the club and its supporters. Makhanya expressed his excitement to be a part of such a passionate encounter and anticipates an intense atmosphere from the first whistle to the last.
