Maitland-Niles Opts Out of Taking Knee in Premier League Anti-Racism Initiative

Everton player Ainsley Maitland-Niles did not take the knee alongside his teammates and opponents from Chelsea on Saturday as the Premier League launched its 'No Room For Racism' initiative. The gesture, an anti-racism demonstration, took place before the lunchtime kickoff at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. Maitland-Niles was the only player on the field who remained standing. The reasons for his decision are not yet public.

The Premier League's 'No Room For Racism' initiative, which aims to tackle discrimination and highlight diversity in football, is scheduled for two match weeks in October. Players have the option to perform the pre-match gesture during these periods.

The practice of taking the knee in English football began in 2020, following the death of George Floyd in U.S. police custody and the subsequent rise of the Black Lives Matter movement. In August 2022, the Premier League, after consulting with players, changed its approach from a pre-match ritual before every game to a more limited observance during specific 'No Room For Racism' match rounds.

Some footballers have previously voiced concerns that the gesture has lost its impact. In 2021, Wilfried Zaha described the act as 'degrading,' stating his belief that individuals should be proud of their identity without needing to perform the action. Ivan Toney also commented that players were being 'used as puppets.'

Last year, the Lionesses, England's women's national football team, chose not to take the knee before their Euro 2025 semi-final match against Italy. Captain Lucy Bronze explained that the decision was a collective one, influenced by ongoing racist abuse directed at players, such as defender Jess Carter on social media. Bronze suggested that the anti-racism message might not be as strong as it once was, given that such incidents still occur.

The Premier League reiterated its commitment to combating discrimination during the recent initiative kickoff. The league continues to highlight the importance of diversity within the sport.
