Patrick Mahomes, a three-time Super Bowl champion and two-time NFL MVP, has been ranked as the league's second-best quarterback in ESPN's annual poll of anonymous league insiders. The Kansas City Chiefs star is now behind Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills, according to the poll of approximately 70 executives, coaches, and scouts. Mahomes had held the top spot in this poll for the previous three seasons.

Despite the demotion, some insiders still view Mahomes as the premier player at his position. One NFL quarterbacks coach described him as someone who "still puts fear in people like no other quarterback" and whose "skill set combined with his will to win puts him at the top."

However, a portion of those polled expressed concerns about Mahomes' performance, even prior to the torn ACL he suffered last season. One anonymous NFL coordinator suggested that Mahomes was showing signs of regression, stating, "I think the hits were taking the toll even before the injury." This coach added that "the violent hits he's taken, the big-time shots, are a thing," referencing Mahomes' physical build.

Another defensive coach was more direct, observing that Mahomes "struggled even before the injury last year – held the ball too long and forced throws when it wasn't necessary." This coach also noted a tendency to "chase the big play instead of keeping the offense on schedule." Despite these criticisms, the same coach acknowledged Mahomes' significant impact, estimating that "If they don't have him, they win three games, tops [last year]."

Mahomes experienced his most challenging season statistically in 2025, posting an 89.6 quarterback rating, his lowest since becoming a full-time starter in 2018. The Chiefs missed the postseason that year amidst various injuries and salary-cap issues.

Mahomes participated in some drills during minicamp as he works towards recovery from his knee surgery. His availability for the Week 1 opener remains uncertain. Should he be unable to play, the Chiefs are expected to start newly acquired quarterback Justin Fields. Rookie seventh-round pick Garrett Nussmeier could also be considered if Fields struggles.

The addition of Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III at running back could provide support to the Chiefs' offense, potentially easing pressure on whoever is playing quarterback.
