Madueke Proves Value with Crucial Goal for Arsenal

Noni Madueke demonstrated his value to Arsenal with a decisive second-half goal that secured a vital three points in their Premier League title defense against Nottingham Forest. The England international, who has largely featured as a substitute this season, converted an 80th-minute strike to cap off a performance that showcased his "anger and conviction."

Madueke has started only one league game this season, a win against Leeds United. His minutes have been limited due to the strong form of Christos Tzolis, who was Arsenal's primary winger signing. However, Tzolis's recent hamstring injury has created an opportunity for Madueke to make his case.

Manager Mikel Arteta praised Madueke's performance during the international break, noting he "grabbed" his starting opportunity against Leeds with both hands. Madueke also started on the right wing, his preferred position, in a Champions League victory against Lille, where he provided the opening assist.

Introduced at halftime against Forest, Madueke adhered to Arteta's instructions to "attack the opposition, be dangerous, be yourself and be good defensively." He described his winning goal, which came from a shot with his weaker right foot after cutting inside, as a deliberate move: "I'd beaten him on the outside a couple of times so I thought I'll come inside and just let rip."

Despite a challenging start to his Arsenal career, which included fan opposition upon his £48.5 million transfer from Chelsea, Madueke has become an important figure. He contributed to Arsenal's first league title in 22 years and played a significant role in their Champions League final run last season, with eight goals and four assists in 43 appearances. His direct style and ability in one-on-one situations are recognized by both Arsenal and England staff.

Arteta described Madueke as a "special character" and highlighted his positive influence in the dressing room, noting that some teammates would call on him if they had a problem. "I think it is a massive credit and describes the type of person he is," Arteta said.

The 24-year-old has now delivered three consecutive strong performances. "He is in a good moment," Arteta observed. "After the break, he is showing something else, another level of anger, another level of conviction as well as in his actions and he is becoming decisive in matches, which is what we expect from a player like him."

Arteta's philosophy of valuing his substitutes, whom he refers to as "finishers," appears to be yielding results. Arsenal substitutes have been involved in 26 Premier League goals since the start of last season, more than any other team. This "finisher" mentality was evident against Forest, where Madueke delivered when the opportunity arose.

Arteta acknowledged the challenge of breaking down a well-organized Forest side but expressed confidence that his team would find openings as the game progressed and physical levels dropped. "And the finishers delivered because the context of the game changed a little bit," he stated.
