Luke Littler Eliminated in Youth Championship Semifinals for Second Consecutive Year

Nineteen-year-old darts sensation Luke Littler has once again been eliminated in the semi-finals of the World Youth Championship, a development that has led some to question his decision to compete in the tournament. Littler, who has won back-to-back senior world titles and earned substantial prize money, entered the youth event for a second consecutive year despite his senior success.

Many observers and fellow players, including defending champion Gian van Veen who opted not to participate this year, suggested Littler had little to gain and much to lose by entering the competition. Despite being the world number one, Littler fell 6-5 to Cam Crabtree in the semifinals, mirroring his exit in the same round last year when he lost to Beau Greaves. The tournament is open to players aged 16 to 24, and Littler won the title in 2023.

The winner of the World Youth Championship receives £15,000, a significantly smaller sum compared to Littler's usual earnings. Littler advanced through his group undefeated and defeated Lewis Cook, David Fidler, Archie Self, and Harrison Leigh to reach the final four.

Following his defeat, some social media users commented on Littler's performance. One post on X read: 'UNLUCKYYYYYYYY. Littler was never in a million years going to Minehead.' Another user posted, 'Luke Littler is officially washed and needs to retire!' A third suggested, 'Hopefully this makes Luke Littler actually practice more, imagine if he practiced everyday how good he could be.'

Last year, Littler defended his participation, stating, 'It's the same venue as what we professionals play and obviously the likes of Gian van Veen - tour card holder, Keane Barry - tour card holder - both played, but I'm the one that gets it in the neck. I didn't win, so a lot of people were happy, but I just thought I'd come and get used to playing first to five, first to six, and that's what I've done today and yesterday.'

This recent semi-final exit follows Littler's first-round defeat to Luke Woodhouse in the Grand Prix. Sky Sports pundit Wayne Mardle expressed his bewilderment regarding Littler's choice to enter the youth championship, noting, 'I don't know what he wants to gain from it. It doesn't make any sense to me. I just don't see the value time-wise. Because time-management's everything when you're playing a lot.' Mardle added after the Grand Prix loss, 'It's the fact that Luke Littler didn't play well. I just think he's underperforming right now, for whatever reason. Bearing in mind we're humans, we're not robots, we're not automatons, we do have off days as well. He's just having a couple of off days right now.'

The World Youth Championship final is scheduled to occur concurrently with the Players' Championship final at the end of November. Littler is unlikely to qualify for the latter event, having opted out of most of the year's qualifying tournaments.
