Luka Dončić Surpasses LeBron James in Lakers' 40-Point Games Record

Luka Dončić is making his mark on the Los Angeles Lakers' record books, recently surpassing LeBron James for sixth-most 40-point games with the team. Dončić reached this milestone during the Lakers' 132-123 victory over the Utah Jazz on Sunday, where he recorded 52 points, eight rebounds, and 10 assists.

This was Dončić's 10th career game scoring 50 or more points. Since entering the league in 2018, only James Harden with 16 and Damian Lillard with 11 have more 50-point performances than Dončić. His standout performance on Sunday also helped the Lakers overcome an 18-point deficit in the first quarter and maintain their undefeated 3-0 record.

Dončić, acquired by the Lakers in a trade from the Mavericks in February 2025, is entering his third season with the team. He recently expressed his commitment to Los Angeles, stating his hope to finish his career with the Lakers. "Hopefully, yeah," Dončić told the California Post. "But as you know in this NBA business, you never know what’s going to happen. But I feel like I’ve found something here that’s very comfortable for me. And hopefully [that happens]."

LeBron James spent eight seasons with the Lakers, his longest consecutive tenure with any team. Dončić has quickly established himself as a key player for the franchise.
