Ludek Miklosko, the former West Ham United goalkeeper celebrated for his pivotal role in the 1994-95 Premier League season, has died at the age of 64. Miklosko, affectionately known as 'Big Ludo' by fans, had been undergoing cancer treatment since 2021 and announced late in 2024 that he would be withdrawing from further treatment.

He received a hero's reception upon his return to West Ham for a Premier League match against Liverpool just days before his passing was announced.

Miklosko arrived at West Ham in February 1990 from Czech club Banik Ostrava, becoming the first footballer to move from Czechoslovakia to England following the fall of communism. In an era before widespread internet access, he was little known outside his homeland upon his arrival in London. He initially faced a two-month wait for a work permit and trained alone during that period. Manager Lou Macari signed him for £300,000, but resigned the day after Miklosko's arrival, with Billy Bonds taking over the team.

Starting his English career with limited English and no car, Miklosko relied on teammates Ian Bishop and Trevor Morley for transport to training. Over eight years with the Hammers, he made 374 appearances, becoming a cult figure among supporters. He was named Hammer of the Year as West Ham secured promotion back to the top flight in 1991 and also featured in FA Cup and League Cup semi-finals.

Miklosko's most memorable performance came on the final day of the 1994-95 season. His extraordinary saves prevented Manchester United from securing a third consecutive Premier League title. Manchester United's draw against West Ham resulted in Blackburn Rovers being crowned champions. The then-Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson described the game as a "siege" in reference to Miklosko's defensive efforts.

In 2020, Miklosko recounted that even staff at Manchester United's training academy recalled the match and his performance, sharing a laugh about the frustration he caused the opposing team. He earned 42 international caps, the last two for the Czech Republic after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia.

After retiring from playing, Miklosko had a spell as goalkeeping coach at West Ham before returning to Banik Ostrava as sporting director in 2022. He continued working there, with supporters displaying a banner in his honor earlier in 2025. Miklosko often spoke of his deep affection for both Banik Ostrava and West Ham United, noting the similar passionate and loyal mentality of their fan bases.

He is survived by his legacy as a beloved figure whose name is still sung by West Ham fans more than 25 years after his playing career ended.
