Fox World Cup host Rebecca Lowe has dismissed reports of tension between her broadcasting colleagues Zlatan Ibrahimović and Alexi Lalas, stating that any perceived friction is exaggerated and a source of amusement for the team.
Both Ibrahimović and fellow World Cup winner Thierry Henry have, on occasion, appeared impatient with Lalas during live broadcasts. Ibrahimović notably called Lalas "the past" and dismissed his comments on France's perceived arrogance during a match against Senegal. Following Lalas's departure from the studio to report from the Seattle stadium for the U.S. team's second group game, Ibrahimović remarked, "You're welcome, America."
Footage also circulated of a lighthearted studio segment where the three analysts were playing soccer, and Henry playfully tricked Lalas with a fake backheel.
However, Lowe insists that the on-air exchanges do not reflect any off-air discord. "These stories do make me laugh and we do laugh about them," Lowe told talkSPORT. "We're like, 'another one'? And it is getting a little out of hand."
Lalas has also engaged in banter, at one point remarking on Ibrahimović's cream suit, comparing him to a presenter from the 1970s show 'Fantasy Island.'
Despite these exchanges, Lowe emphasized the underlying respect among the analysts. "There is nothing, there is no tension, nothing! We are laughing our heads off at all of this," she stated. "Everybody respects everybody hugely. If people want to watch and listen to what the guys say to each other and work off each other, they would see that."
Lowe described the narrative of unrest as a "strange old narrative" and asserted, "It just doesn't exist. It is crazy."
A source close to the broadcaster, however, offered a different perspective to the Daily Mail, suggesting that a cooler atmosphere prevails between the analysts during commercial breaks.
Potential for increased tension exists as the United States prepares to face Bosnia and Herzegovina. Lalas played for the United States during the 1990s, while Ibrahimović's father is Bosnian, a connection that reportedly led to the striker becoming emotional when the team advanced to the knockout rounds earlier in the tournament. The match is scheduled to be held at the stadium in the San Francisco Bay area.
