Liverpool's defensive ranks are under strain as injuries and long-term contract situations create an immediate challenge for new head coach Andoni Iraola. The club is reportedly seeking reinforcements for the heart of its defense, a situation exacerbated by recent pre-season setbacks.

Joe Gomez, Liverpool's longest-serving current player, was forced off with an injury in the eighth minute of a pre-season fixture against Sunderland. His absence, coupled with the unavailability of Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni, has left the team with a significant shortage at center-back. Gomez has a history of injuries, having missed 225 games since joining the club in 2015, according to Transfermarkt. An update on the severity of his latest injury is expected this week.

Virgil van Dijk remains the only fit senior center-back. However, at 35 years old and having played every minute in the Premier League last season, he is not considered the same formidable force. Adding to the uncertainty, both Van Dijk and Gomez are in the final year of their contracts, raising the possibility that they could depart next summer. This situation leaves Liverpool vulnerable in the short term, despite their efforts in long-term talent acquisition.

Liverpool had previously invested in young center-back prospects Mor Talla Ndiaye and Ifeanyi Ndukwe for a combined £3.5 million from the U17 World Cup. While this demonstrated foresight in talent scouting under head of global talent Matt Newberry, these teenage players are still considered far from fully developed. Similarly, the club acquired Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni for significant fees, £60 million and £26 million respectively, believing them to be the best young center-backs in France and Italy. Jacquet is slated to make his debut against Leeds United on Sunday. Although these signings are seen as investments for the future, they do not immediately address the current defensive crisis.

Iraola himself had previously described the squad as "very thin" defensively even before the latest injury concerns. Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler echoed these sentiments, stating, "We need players. It's fairly obvious." He expressed sympathy for Gomez's injury plight and highlighted the importance of experienced players like Gomez and Van Dijk guiding the younger generation. Fowler suggested that it would not be surprising if the club pursued additional experienced center-back options to bolster the squad.
