Lionesses Dominate Greece 5-0 in World Cup Qualifier

The England Lionesses demonstrated a ruthless performance, defeating Greece 5-0 in a World Cup qualifying match at the King Power Stadium. This emphatic win followed a less convincing 3-1 victory earlier in the week, bringing England's aggregate score to 8-1 over the two matches.

The team's improved intensity was evident early on. Alessia Russo opened the scoring in the third minute, capitalizing on a pass from Lauren James after Georgia Stanway's interception. James then extended England's lead with a curling effort. Lauren Hemp was instrumental on the left flank, providing two pinpoint crosses that led to goals for Stanway and James's second of the night. Russo added her second, her third of the international break, in the 75th minute, signaling a return to form.

Debutante Lexi Potter, a 20-year-old midfielder from Chelsea, made her first start for the Lionesses. Despite initial nerves and a misplaced pass early in the game, Potter grew in confidence, making key interceptions and demonstrating her potential. Her emergence offers manager Sarina Wiegman more midfield options, potentially giving Keira Walsh greater freedom to advance.

"It took a bit of time to grow into the game but I feel like once I did, it was better. There's definitely more to come," Potter stated after the match. The midfield selection presents an interesting challenge for Wiegman, with other young players like Erica Meg Parkinson and Jess Park also impressing during the international window.

Despite the strong attacking performance, questions linger regarding England's defense. The victory against a less experienced Greek side masked some defensive frailties, particularly in playing out from the back. Wiegman continues to assess her central defensive partnerships, with Jess Carter starting at center-back alongside captain Leah Williamson. The role of right-back also remains an area of consideration, with Maya Le Tissier playing in the absence of Lucy Bronze.

England is now set to face Ukraine in a two-legged playoff in December. A victory in those matches would secure their spot in the World Cup.
