Lionel Messi concluded his illustrious 21-year international career with Argentina in an emotional farewell match against Benin on Tuesday night. The 39-year-old forward scored a goal and provided two assists in Argentina's 3-0 victory, marking his 208th and final appearance for his country.
Following the match, in a gesture that surprised many, the referee, Chilean official Fernando Vejar, presented Messi with his yellow and red cards as a parting gift, in addition to the match ball. Messi was then surrounded by teammates and opponents, with one player even requesting a selfie on the field.
The evening was filled with tributes, including a musical performance and an emotional speech from Messi himself. "My dad is the first person I think about tonight," he began, remembering his late father. "I can only thank you all. It has been a huge pride to defend this shirt for over 20 years. We never stopped fighting, never stopped giving everything. Playing for Argentina is the most beautiful thing."
Messi's words visibly moved his teammates, including Enzo Fernandez, and the fans in attendance. "I want to thank all of my teammates. You made all of my dreams come true... I was surrounded by warriors. I'm going to miss this," he continued. "This may be the saddest day of my career, leaving the national team. I don't want to leave this place. I don't want to leave the field... I love all of you, and I will miss all of you. I am proud to be Argentinian."
The legendary forward retires from international football having achieved significant success, including two Copa America titles and a World Cup victory.
