The New York Mets secured a decisive 12-2 victory over the New York Yankees in the Subway Series on Saturday, powered by a two-homer performance from shortstop Francisco Lindor.
Mets pitcher Zac Thornton delivered a strong outing, allowing just two runs over seven innings. Thornton limited the Yankees to five hits and recorded four strikeouts, exiting the game with a comfortable lead. "I think it’s something that we’ve gotta figure out for sure, and it’s one of those times in the season where you have to start making adjustments. Sometimes adjustments are hard, but that’s the demand of the game, right?" said Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole.
Lindor set the tone early, homering off Cole in the leadoff spot. He later extended the Mets' lead in the eighth inning with a grand slam against reliever Bradley Hanner. This marked Lindor's 24th career multi-homer game and his third against the Yankees.
Gerrit Cole struggled on the mound for the Yankees, surrendering a home run to the first batter he faced. He ultimately gave up nine hits, including three home runs and five earned runs in 4 1/3 innings. This outing marks the second consecutive start where Cole has allowed multiple home runs, raising his earned run average to 3.67. Cole has now been responsible for seven home runs in his last two starts against the Mets, and he has taken the loss in all three of his recent starts against them, with an ERA of 10.93 in those games.
