Recent travel disruptions to Dallas have mirrored the New York Liberty's season, marked by weather delays, mechanical issues, and subsequent tarmac stranding. This mirrors the team's struggles with injuries and late arrivals that have hampered their performance.
"It sucks, there's no way around it, but it is what it is," guard Sabrina Ionescu said Friday regarding the team's travel issues. "We got to make a good push before we get a break."
The Liberty, holding a 13-11 record with championship aspirations, face three glaring issues as they approach the All-Star break.
Wing Depth Tested by Injuries
The team had aimed to fortify its roster against injuries, but the wing position has become unexpectedly shallow. Betnijah Laney-Hamilton has struggled to find a consistent role after a yearlong layoff due to a knee injury. Satou Sabally is dealing with her second concussion in eight months, and Leonie Fiebich recently sustained a left foot injury.
The absence of Sabally and Fiebich has impacted the Liberty on both ends of the court. Fiebich's presence on the court correlates with a 7.8 net rating for the team, which drops to minus-1.7 when she is off the court. For Sabally, the net rating is 4.9 when she plays and 3.6 when she does not. The team's ability to switch defensively has suffered, leading to an increase in opponents' three-point shooting percentage over the past two weeks to 38.7 percent, a 6.6 percent rise from the preceding 21 games.
Overall Performance Decline
While Ionescu stated that offense is not the primary concern, coach Chris DeMarco noted that defensive efforts are not being capitalized on offensively. The reality suggests a middle ground, with both aspects needing improvement.
Following an eight-game winning streak on June 17, the Liberty ranked fourth in offensive rating (110.2), defensive rating (102.2), and net rating (8.1). However, these metrics have shifted negatively in the last nine games, during which the team has gone 2-7. Their offensive rating has fallen to 107.9 (seventh in that span), defensive rating to 110.0 (ninth), and net rating to minus-2.1 (ninth).
Injuries and a lack of lineup continuity have disrupted team chemistry. Nevertheless, factors like effort, opponent awareness, sound decision-making with the ball, game plan execution, and defensive communication remain within the team's control. "In general… we know we have to be better," DeMarco said. "We have to find a way to compete and to execute for a full 40 minutes."
Late-Game Execution Lapses
The Liberty have struggled in the closing stages of games, frequently falling into double-digit deficits in their last five losses. Despite rallying in the fourth quarter in recent defeats against the Minnesota Lynx and Toronto Tempo, the team ultimately lost both games by two possessions or fewer.
For the first time since the start of the superteam era in 2023, the Liberty are experiencing a negative net rating in clutch situations. Notably, the team holds positive point differentials in every quarter except the fourth.
Although the core veteran players—Ionescu, Breanna Stewart, and Jonquel Jones—are in their fourth season together, this is their first season playing under DeMarco and his largely new coaching staff. Historically, this trio has thrived in high-stakes moments, a performance pattern that has not been consistent this season.
