Liberty Coach DeMarco Unconcerned by Ionescu's Playoff Struggles
Despite a statistically challenging Game 1, head coach Chris DeMarco expressed confidence in Sabrina Ionescu's ability to perform in crucial moments.
New York Liberty head coach Chris DeMarco stated he is not worried about guard Sabrina Ionescu’s playoff performance, emphasizing her historical reliability in critical situations.
Ionescu finished Game 1 of the WNBA playoff series against the Minnesota Lynx with 13 points on 14 shots, along with zero rebounds and six assists. The Liberty secured a 16-point victory despite Ionescu’s efficiency struggles, with significant contributions from Breanna Stewart, Leonie Fiebich, Jonquel Jones, and Pauline Astier.
"We go as Sab goes," DeMarco said prior to Game 1, highlighting Ionescu's importance to the team’s success. He added that he believes players often face challenges adjusting back into rhythm after injuries, and that Ionescu has been instrumental in many of the team’s wins. "She’s won us some massive games, some late-game comebacks," DeMarco noted. "We’re gonna be as good as she is, and we know she’s up for the challenge. This is what she does. She’s a clutch player, and playoff time, this is where she goes. So I think with Sab especially, I’m not worried about her. She knows what she needs to do."
Ionescu’s playoff performance is seen as an extension of a season where she has worked to find consistency adapting to a new system and role, while also managing injuries. She missed the start of the season with a foot injury and later dealt with a back issue.
Outside of a strong stretch in July, Ionescu’s statistics have been below her usual averages. This season, she averaged 14.6 points per game, her lowest since 2021, and shot 29.5 percent from three-point range, well below her career average. In the final four regular-season games, she shot 28.6 percent from the field and 29.2 percent from deep, averaging 11.3 points.
Despite these statistical trends, DeMarco lauded Ionescu for bringing positive energy to the games. The Liberty ultimately won Game 1, with Stewart leading the team with a historic performance. The team’s depth was also on display, with other players stepping up to contribute to the win.
