Pressure is mounting on Leicester City manager Russell Martin following a resounding 4-0 defeat at home to Oxford United in a League One clash on Saturday. The loss marks a new low for the club, which famously won the Premier League title a decade ago.
Despite securing their first league win of the season just four days prior, Leicester's vulnerabilities were starkly exposed by Oxford. The Foxes currently sit 17th in the third tier of English football, having accumulated only five points from their opening five league games under Martin, who took charge on a three-year contract in June.
Following the match, Martin described his players as "too soft and naive." He lamented the team's poor start to the game, conceding a goal early on that he felt shifted the momentum. "The start to the second half summed it up," Martin stated. "We had five kick-offs and three of them ended up with a chance on our goal, which is crazy. And I think that shows the lack of experience we have on the pitch and in the decision-making at times."
He added that the team was caught in transition against an Oxford side adept at exploiting such opportunities. "I brought some experienced guys off, to try and inject some energy. But we were too soft and too naive. That’s frustrating and painful, because we looked the exact opposite of the team we’d been going into this and that was a team ready to be aggressive and fight for each other."
Though Martin identified early chances for debutant Emil Riis and two saves forced from Jayden Joseph as minor positives, Oxford had already taken the lead. Mark Harris opened the scoring in the seventh minute, a goal that stood despite a question over whether the ball brushed his arm. The defensive marking for the goal was also criticized.
Oxford doubled their advantage in the 57th minute through Mo Missanga's first senior goal, assisted by Kai Andrews. Three minutes later, Harris completed his brace from another Andrews assist, capitalizing on more defensive frailties. The humiliation was sealed in the 77th minute when Jamie McDonnell scored following a lapse in concentration at the back.
During the latter stages of the match, Martin faced chants of "you're getting sacked in the morning" from both sets of supporters, with many Leicester fans departing the King Power Stadium after Oxford's third goal. Chants of "sack the board" were also directed at the club's leadership, including CEO Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, who was in attendance.
This result compounds a difficult start to Martin's tenure. Last season, he lasted only 123 days as manager of Rangers, making him the club's shortest-reigning manager. Prior to that, he led Southampton to promotion to the Premier League via the playoffs but was dismissed the following season after securing just one win in 16 top-flight matches.
