NBA free agent LeBron James has publicly thanked the Los Angeles Lakers organization, including governor Jeanie Buss and general manager Rob Pelinka, during his first appearance since it was reported he would not re-sign with the team. James made these remarks at Fanatics Fest in New York on July 16.
"Shout out my former team," James said during an appearance on the “Mind the Game” podcast. "I spent eight great years with the Los Angeles Lakers… That was an unbelievable ride and I am looking forward to what comes next as I wind down my journey. It’s going to be fun wherever I land."
The 41-year-old athlete's departure from the Lakers marks the end of an eight-year tenure that included an NBA championship in 2020. While the specific reasons for his decision to pursue "complete basketball happiness" have not been detailed, speculation suggests a strained relationship may have begun with the Russell Westbrook trade in 2021.
James also interacted with fans and fellow NBA player Tyrese Haliburton at the event.
Several teams are reportedly in contention for James's signature, with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, and Golden State Warriors being cited as finalists in the ongoing free agency sweepstakes. James indicated that a decision is imminent.
Both James and the Lakers organization appear to have moved on as the veteran player navigates the final stages of his illustrious career. He shared his anticipation for the next chapter, emphasizing that the destination will be enjoyable regardless of the team he joins.
