LeBron James has agreed to a two-year, $8 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, a move that has dramatically altered the team's NBA Finals odds. Following the announcement on Friday, the 76ers' odds for the 2027 NBA Finals surged from 20/1 to 9/1 at DraftKings Sportsbook, placing them among the top contenders. Their odds to win the Eastern Conference Finals also improved significantly, moving from +750 to +350.
Kalshi prediction market traders now estimate Philadelphia's championship chances at 11 percent. This development comes shortly after the 76ers acquired former NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown and secured MVP Joel Embiid and two-time All-Star Tyrese Maxey.
The 76ers' odds had already seen an increase from their offseason opening of 55/1 to 20/1 after acquiring Brown from Boston on July 1 in exchange for Paul George and four draft picks.
James, who is set to begin his 24th season, described this as his "last decision" and stated his motivation is to compete for another championship. "I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team and I am so excited to energize a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time," James said on X.
Last season, the 76ers struggled with size and rebounding, issues exacerbated by injuries to Embiid, leading to a second-round sweep by the Knicks. Maxey often shouldered a significant offensive load due to a lack of bench production. Since drafting Embiid in 2016, the team's deepest playoff run was to Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals in 2019.
During his tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers, James won his fourth NBA Championship and Finals MVP in 2020, was an eight-time All-Star, and became the NBA's all-time leading scorer in 2023. He averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists in his final season with the Lakers before their second-round playoff exit.
